When you look at this department store picture it's very inviting.  This is partially because of the lighting, it gives off a warm glow.  On the other hand there is a simple elegance about it.  No flashy colors, just calm and relaxing.  This may not attract everyone, but it's certainly simple and non-offensive.  The store created this look by using a lighter color on the walls, so the clothing itself would stand out against the store.  This in turn drawing people to the clothing, which then makes profit for the store.

  1. Hi Amanda, why do you think stores like Hollister and Abercrombie & Fitch get so much business when the music is loud and the lighting is dark?

  2. Well Ashley,
I think it's a combination of things. It doesn't just involve the color. As you said the music is loud. Well when you're walking in the mall and there's loud music it grabs your attention. So this will be the first thing that you realize. Then you'll see how dark the store is and dark colors such as black suggest mystery. Since people can't see what's going on exactly in the store, they may feel like investigating. Another reason they use the dark colors is because they use lighting to pin point the product they want you to buy. For example, in Hollister you can't see much, but what you do see is these strong lights beaming in on their clothing. These techniques put together helps Hollister emphasize this sort of cutting edge look to increase their number of customers. Overall it does come down to the person. These combination's of things may turn a person away from the store or increase their interest.
